@jimtrueblue99 They do, but these sort of killings are rare. I like how you neglect to mention that God (assuming he exists) severely punished Cain for what he did.

So there is an instinctual prohibition against killing members of "your own group?" Mr. Pigliucci needs to do some more reading. Perhaps he should start with the Cain and Abel story in Genesis. Then he might read the Orestia by Aeschylus. And then he might consult social statistics about domestic violence. There is no such instinctual prohibition in humans. Humans kill "group" members just as readily as they kill non-group members.

@Donnievil The selection for "moral" actions in primates occured at a group, not an individual, level; refraining from killing other members of your kin increases the chance that your group will survive and reproduce. From another perspective, psychopaths' perception of morality has no place in modern society simply because it does not conform to the rest of ours. It is a system where majority rules and fortunately, as Dr. Pigliucci points out, the majority tend to have similar ideas.

But psychopaths do have a sense of morality. With no external basis for morality how can we know that "psychopaths" are not simply more "evolved" than everyone else?
