I was formulating how to debate the issue when I luckily saw your self-correction.

Propaganda websites prey on faulty logic. I saw a few say: "There is absolutely no proof that culling harp seals will restore fish stocks to their original numbers."

True. But that's not to say that there is no proof that culling seals will slow down the depletion of stocks.

@djvardar Yes definitely in the thousands, a couple of hundred thousand, actually.

But when your looking at let's say 8 million seals (not sure if that figure is supposed to included the pups or not) even 300,000 is only 3.75%.

But the sealers haven't even got close to their limits in the last couple of years because of the lack of ice in the area. There aren't enough safe places for the mothers to give birth so pups are drowning or being crushed by the ice moving around in the water.

@djvardar The anti-hunt faction argued ad nauseum that a burgeoning seal population was eating up cod and other fish and having an adverse affect on the regions fishing industry, which has been all but decimated. Well here's a new one for them to pretend isn't happening: The seals are filling their bellies with prized crab meat! There goes another industry.

It's not against the law. The conservation movement encourages the culling of harp seals because their numbers are too high and it's affecting the populations of certain fish species.

Nobody in Canada who defends the seals is gonna travel up to where they are being hunted. Once you enter into the territory of where the hunt happens, you begin to realize that the hunt makes sense and those stuck in the city are only viewing the situation through a very narrow window.
