Pelican crossings are common throughout the UK (until the awful Puffin crossing began to replace it). They were revolutionary when first unleashed onto the public. Activated by a pedestrian the crossing stops all vehicular traffic allowing the pedestrian to walk safely.

Unique to the UK is the flashing amber phase. After the red light the amber light flashes (same time as the green man flashes). This signals to the pedestrian that it is no longer safe to crossing. It also signals to the traffic that they can proceed; as long as there are no pedestrians already on the crossing.

This Lego Pelican crossing follows the same pattern and was made possible by the use of a Lifelite unit. http://www.lifelites.com/

The traffic light themselves are made of cardboard and glow in the dark paper (for the white borders). The hoods over the lights are lego visors.
