In this segment, Augusto 'Tanquinho' Mendes shares the technique he's been using lately in competition to defeat the 50/50 guard. It's really important to keep your trapped leg straight so that you keep your opponent from getting underneath you. Once you have a good base and the trapped leg is straight you can stand to break the legs open and then work the pass. There is a lot of subtle movements in this technique so work it with your training partner for a while in drilling before trying it live.

  • This position has a lot of holes in it, for starters formigas legs arent even locked, and when augustu stands it would be very ,very easy to sweep him back to his right side.

  • @NickC1973 Are you serious or just trolling?

  • @bjjweekly No, I'm no troll. I just know that if the guys leg is locked with the heel below the thigh you can't use your elbow to push his thigh over the foot, not to mention standing in the 50/50 usually ends up disasterous. Also if formiga wraps his left leg around Tanquinos right arm while Tanquino is standing he has an even easier sweep from the bottom.

  • @NickC1973 Dude, I don't know what to tell you, just that I'm gonna have to trust Tanquinho on this one since he's got boatloads of experience using this position in high level competition. - Bill

  • Why does the guy want to get under him? I mean, probably for a sweep or something, but why not just attempt a heel hook or other leg lock? I'm a white belt, so I'm just assuming I'm not seeing something they're seeing. But it seems like heel hooks and stuff are super vulnerable from 50/50.

  • @willman808 those attacks are possible but fairly low percentage with guys at this level and it also opens you up to attack as well, better to try and improve position unless it's a last ditch effort because of time or some other factor

  • @NickC1973

he hit this on Gui ...that means it could be hit on just about anyone else that plays 50/50, pretty arrogant to question one of the best in the world.

  • @NickC1973

I think (just my two cents worth) that the key is in the details.

    - Keeping his trapped leg straight prevents formiga from getting under him, hence making it difficult to lock legs and also disrupt tanquinho's balance (thus getting the sweep).

-Strong (right hand) grip on pant with forearm to shin means that he is in control of the left leg, and able to respond to attacks.

-He drops base whilst straightening trapped leg first. Suggest you test it out first?

  • @NickC1973 There are few people I would trust to point out holes in Tanquinho's game. You are certainly not one of them.

  • No Heel hooks allowed in BJJ (gi). This pass is legit

  • would this work no gi

  • @willman808 heel hooks are illegal in gi-competitions. If it was no-gi he probably would be going for a heel hook, but with the different rules for gi--comps it completely changes what people use the 50/50 guard for.
