The heel width is different on each individual horse, pony, mule, etc. There is no rule. The 3" was ideal for this horse. Your farrier can determine this.

and thank you but I´d really like to know on what this 3" width was based! If this is just relevant to horses or if there is also an exact width for ponies. (I also have a pony!) An explanation would be really appreciated :-)

How was it decided that the width should be 3"? If that´s breed specific I think you need to state that - or if you are saying every breed.........! Thoroughbred, QH, Arab etc all the same width then my horses are all wrong - despite having very healthy hooves!!! I have Appaloosa, Andalusian, Arabian and Hispanoárabe - all different
