But Schnabel had a fatter face.
And Schnabel killed fewer people in his lifetime.

Great playing! Has anyone noticed he looked a bit like Stalin on the photograph?

@EscargoTouChaud Got here now from the same reason, to discover just the same, I heard it before. But it never attracted my attention in particular.

Yess! I've found it! From the first try :))

Pls stop the bickering; Schnabel in all performances (esp those of Beethoven) laid the path for latter generations - however many pianists never took up where Schnabel left off, giving lacking renditions of past works. Eg, Compare the Appassionata of Richter to that of poor Kempff...

@marcxopoco Well, we don't know about the killing thing, hahaha.

This is a marvel. Thanks for posting.

@donbasuradenuevo Oshima's talking about this made me search it up, only to find out I've heard it a million times before and have two CDs with Schubert's sonatas, but now I feel my experience when listening to it has deepened! Love Murakami, Schubert and this Schnabel!

Thumbs up if you looked for this song after reading Kafka on the Shore.

@vadimrusmov85 Yes a bit like Stalin. let's not let that get in the way. Fairly typical of the "look" then. At least he is smiling!

This is probably my favorite recording of the D Major Sonata. The tempo is just right.
Liszt played a Schubert Sonata in A minor in public in the 1830's.
Anton Rubinstein played the Bb Sonata, the late A major, the D major.
So much for the false pr for Schnabel. He played well enough; he doesn't need any phony pr.

Anton Rubinsteins Historical Concerts of 1885 included eight Beethoven sonatas, and selected sonatas of Clementi, Weber, Chopin, Schumann and others. Rubinstein did not include any Schubert sonatas. (He did play the Minuetto from the G major Sonata). If one needed proof as to how Schuberts sonatas were regarded during this period, this should suffice. It was Schnabels advocacy of these sonatas that led to them being consecrated into the standard repertoire.

Do you have Schnabel's recording of Schubert's piano sonata D959?

I hadn't heard Schnabel's performance of this sonata before, so thanks for posting! Was this the first recording of this sonata ever made? I wouldn't say that Richter's and Gilels' takes on this piece sounds dull, unspontaneous and amateurish in comparison, but Schnabel definitely has a touch of his own. Any chance of posting the rest of the parts on YouTube as well?

It could be the first recording, but I'm not sure. I hesitate to answer because I have a 1928 recording of Leff Pouishnoff playing the composer's complete Sonata in G,D894. Thank you for your comments
