Yiddish is probably closest to Austrian, Swiss and Bavarian dialectst. All are form of High German but Yiddish is based on Medieval High German.

yiddish is like poetry, build on old europe, mainly in the first person. Where there are three tense in english. I don't know how many tense in yiddish, but its from the heart. Which means more, because of the way its expressed. I find it funny too, as my first language was yiddish, until 6 or 7 then only english, and the struction of thinking and expression changed. For me yiddish is poetry

funny, I speak Dutch and reasonably German (along with English) and never realised I could understand Yiddish.
