Bethena - A Concert Waltz, by Scott Joplin

Joplin published this solemn work in March, 1905, six months after the death (from pneumonia) of his 19-year-old wife, Freddie. They had been married for just ten weeks.

I have tried to play this piece with a degree of sadness and devotion, as I imagine Joplin may have felt composing it.

I am indeed a fan of Esther Gokhale! (I'm also her husband. In fact, there are pictures of me in the book.) I believe we met once briefly at Paul Fink's house. With his help, I'm now learning Maple Leaf Rag and some Scarlatti sonatas.

I'm learning scarlatti k491 and k517. I'm enjoying them a lot, but I find it hard to believe I'll be able to play k517 anywhere close to "prestissimo".
