Sodium and Water in a 40 gallon trash can

Sodium and water mix violently and boom in trash can. We added mass to the Na because it typically floats. Na does a do-se-do with water and yields NaOH. The free Hydrogen ignites in the exothermic reaction's heat. Definitely worth donating my trash can to science.

Just like when the Na is on top of the water you will get water vapor from the heat. That part is not a mystery. The "smoke" is just condensation on a cool afternoon.

@upisoft2 H and OH split is indeed basic chemistry involved. However, we observed something that requires us to hypothesize that something else is going on as well. I don't have a doctorate in chemistry so there is likely something going on that is beyond me right now. All I can say now is that I have enough integrity to not fake a demo...ever. Besides, trying to explaining something unexpected is THE FUN of science. You are missing out being so skeptical.
