This is how much dirt I use in my planted tanks. You can see that there are spots of lighter pink. Those spots in the dirt are chunks of clay that I have...Clay is great to use, but you don't need it. If you look you can see how I am mashing down the soil to get out any extra air bubbles. I use a little over an inch in this planted tank. This is the part that I really enjoy, they say, "get your hands in the dirt" This is a great step for me.. I dig that trench so it looks like the whole tank is just gravel. Sometimes when the dirt gets hit with lights it gets funky looking through the glass...it gets moldy looking. But this takes many years....Stay tuned...

  • Can you show us what you capped it with?

I have a sand cap one that is doing good but I'm nervous about no water flow or oxygen getting to the soil. I'm thinking about trying a gravel cap next.

  • @LethalResistanz capped with black gravel....don't worryy about oxygen or water flow. i haven't had any problems....

  • why do you put the trench in the front ?

  • @KETIMENE Just so people can't see the dirt line under it...looks a little better

  • whats up Dustin.. Can I do this with the dirt and then add a layer of "Pool Filtration Sand" on top of it for planting the plants? would that be good? I have gravel but I kinda wanna do the sand.. what do you think?

  • im all about the fish and not about the plats CICHLIDS are the way to go no need for the plants what was that no oxygen thats what air pumps are for ba ha haaa sure your tank will look great man just saying i like the fish more. P.S. you fingered the substrate more than one time and i seen that finger pass by you nose more than one time haha jk man great job.

  • You know you love Aquarium Keeping when you finger the substrate.

    I feel you

  • @TheHasheem any organic dirt works fine with no fertilizer
