I'm sorry to hear that u experienced this in my country, Costa Rica is beautiful, but I never recomend to stay in the downtown area of San Jose, that is dangerous as hell!! the rest of the country is much much better!! if u want a safer travel experience, better u research before going to the foreing country!

Any single women planning to travel to San Jose, CR, be very very careful! My friends and I were almost kidnapped in downtown SJ in the middle of broad daylight by two guys passing themselves off as police officers! I will never ever ever go back to shit craphole ever again.

If you want a safer travel experience in Central America, travel to Panama, Nicaragua, or Guatemala. Be warned!!!
