Yup! this saves power on CRT or ordinary desktop monitors only, because less light is produced on black screens thus less power consumed. However, LCD or laptop monitors on the other hand actually consumes more power on this site because almost all the dots or pixels on the LCD screen has to be powered up to produce a black color portion. I think the site is only a reminder to save power though. :-)

I think that white backgrounds make a computer use more energy than black backgrounds. Not a whole lot, but it adds up. On the bottom of blackle, it will say __x_amount__ Watt hours saved by using a black background - right now it's 1,147,431.910, which is about the energy it takes to light a 100 watt lightbulb for 11,474 hours. Each time you go to blackle instead of google, it saves a tiny bit of energy - just one small thing you can do to save energy!
