@carlottafierce Not true. I don't know about the US economy but colonialism and slavery was actually bad for the UK economy. Even by 1780-90 (when imperialism was in full swing) trade outside of Europe with the "periphery" was less than 1% of GDP and so can't have contributed much. Caribbean sugar colonies monopolies drove up the price of sugar and were bad for the economy, they were only kept because it was in the interest of a powerful upper class minority.
