J Salik's first major campaign was in 1977 in the town of his birth, Lahore. He demanded the release of Pakistan's Prime Minister Zhulfikar Ali Bhutto after he was sent prison following a military coup led by General Zia. In 1979 he organised a joint Christian-Muslim conference to press for the release of American hostages taken by Iran. They were set free on Christmas Day. In 1985 he trekked to the Iran-Iraq border to demand an end to the war between the two countries. In 1986 he set up the Peace-Education Foundation. His eventual reward was a place in the government under Benazir Bhutto as Federal Minister in charge of social welfare. The trappings of government didn't sit easily on J Salik's shoulders. He didn't want to appear tainted in any way and he so he publicly burned all he possessed. He believed a leader should lead by example. www.pukaarnews.com
