An old man visits a scrap yard one day and builds a robot friend to help him accomplish his work more efficiently. The old man is overwhelmed by the work the robot does of building a water tower and a windmill and what a good friend the robot is and sheds a tear of joy. But when he has a startling dream about the robot mourning over his grave, the old man realizes that he won't live forever, so he awakens in the middle of the night to start drawing up some plans. The next day, the old man and robot return to the scrap yard to collect scraps for Old Man's new project. Old Man gestures for Robot to pull a wheel piece out of a tall giant pile of scraps, but when Robot does so, he accidentally causes the entire pile to come crumbling down. When the dust clears, we learn that Old Man has not survived the crash. Robot is heartbroken until he discovers the plans that Old Man was following so enthusiastically -- It's a plan to build a second robot! Robot is overjoyed and carries out Old Man's plans, as he would've wanted. When Robot visits Old Man's grave site high on a hill, Second Robot now joins him. It is a heartfelt gesture of reverence to their creator and friend.

Notes from the Animators:
SCRAP is set in the near future after an apocalyptic global nuclear event. It is based on the daily routine of an old man, Malakai, living in a wasteland. He is living a lonely, boring life, completing his daily routines, until one day he finds something which changes his life: An old abandoned robot head. He takes the robot head home and builds him a body, beginning a friendship which defines both Malakai and his new metal friend.

Final year project by Alan Coughlan, Chris O'Halloran and Joseph Griffin as part of their BA in Multimedia at Cork Institute of Technology.

Music:
The Cardigans, Iron Man (Black Sabbath Cover)
Glitch Mob

  • Regardless of the media used, a good story which touches and resonates with a large body of readers/viewers is really lacking in today's world. Your short is touching and speaks to the human condition on so many levels it would too hard to recount, yet loneliness is definitely one of them. Your story was pure, sweet, and simple. Thank you for posting it here. Much continued success in your many enterprises.
