@tremooloo That's not the only reason to use the capo. But I don't play it that way because Keith didn't play it that way. But the great thing about playing guitar is you can play it any way you like.

Excellent, think you're absolutely right about the capo and std tuning, that D-form E chord seems to be the dead giveaway (don't think there's really any other logical way to get that sound). As to the open G comments, can't quote chapter and verse w/o looking but don't think he really started playing with that much til the next album. Exhibit B is Midnight Rambler, also std tuning w/ capo.

@BobbyTwoTimes It is actually in open E and done with a capo I think. Sorry about forgetting that detail , but I have not played in years. Gave it up when I turned 30 LOL BTW many of there other songs line Brown Sugar , can you hear my knocking ( Keith's part any way) are in open G ,

@alexlancer11 Hey man! Would be cool to hear you play it in open G! Post it for us to enjoy.

I think he is a great guitar player too. It is much harder to play the way he did it. I think you are right about it being open E as I believe you have to use a capo on that one. I forgot as It has been about 14 years since I played. Is that what it is called that thing you put on the fret board ? Yes any one trying it needs to use a capo I guess it was in open E then. I used to be able to play it and I had a nice Gibson Les Paul 59 reisue that I got back around 84. Sadly I sold it years ago :-(

@alexlancer11 : It would be cool if you get a camera and play this song in open G, if you are so damn sure. Tis 's so easy posting a comment. About Gimme Shelter, as far as I know it's partly recorded in open E and not op G. I think privettricker is a great guitarplayer and again, please, please show me the way you play it in open G and maybe you convince me and all other great guitar players who posted Monkey man on You tube (in standard tuning).
The feed back is the harmonics at the start of the song. It also sounds like he is using the volume control. IT is very easy to play the basics of the song with open G. Playing as great as Keith is not easy however. Just find the harmonics on your guitar in open G. They are all in a rowe. That is it at the start of the song that kind of Wooooooo sound you hear. I want to make it clear the guy that plays the above is very good. WOuld be cool if he would do it in open G for you all too.

@alexlancer11 What harmonics? Time code? I hear the piano tinkling and a horn, then Keith starts.

The cool thing is if you have it in open G then you can do that cool harmonic feed back at the start of the song as well as that dada dada da da progresion right after the feed back as well. It is all done with one finger. You are missing the whole point if you are not doing it in open G.

@alexlancer11 What feedback are you talking about? I hear no feedback at the start of the song. And again, I'm still waiting for someone to post a version in open G that sounds anything like the studio recording.

I doubt it is in standard very much. Look at Keith doing give me shelter on The Ed S. show and you can see it is open G. If you play guitar you would know that they are close in chord structure. Keith is a genius however , but trust me it does not sound correct in standard tuning as the tone is to thin. You need open G to get that fat sound.

@alexlancer11 Yes, I hear people say it's in open G. But I've still never heard anyone play it that way and have it sound correct.
