Helen McGuinness demonstrates Thai Stick work to the Left Foot as part of a professional Thai Foot Massage treatment.
Thai Foot Massage is a combination of massage techniques applied to the lower legs and feet that originated in Thailand over 2000 years ago.
The techniques used in Thai Foot Massage have been developed from traditional Thai massage and have elements of Shiatsu, reflexology, Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines incorporated within them.
Thai Foot Massage works the lower legs and feet with stretching and compression to "open" energy lines. A stick is used to stimulate the reflex points on the feet which correspond to the internal organs of the body, thus resulting in general health and well-being.
The theoretical basis of Thai massage lies in the theory of energy lines running throughout the body. Out of the 72,000 energy lines said to be in existence, the focus is on ten major lines called Sen Lines. Important acupressure points are found on these lines.
Whilst the meridians are associated with specific organs, and pressure is applied to certain meridians to increase the energy flow to a particular organ, the Sen Lines follow the form of the body and are connected to the entire mind, body and spirit.
The flow of the Sen Lines up the body represents the body's vital energy forces and serves to stimulate and control the body's physical, mental and emotional processes.
The body functions normally when energy is flowing evenly through the Sen Channels without blockage. When the Sen Lines are blocked, disharmony of the body takes place.
The Thai foot massage concentrates on the major energy lines (Sen Lines) that run throughout the body and specifically those relating to the leg and foot. By stretching along the Sen Lines it helps to free restrictions and open up the surrounding interconnecting tissue, and through the application of pressure it can serve to stimulate the energy flow.
The aim of working the Sen lines in Thai foot massage is to help remove blockages, release stagnant energy, so allowing the flow of energy to harmonise once again, thereby helping to improve vitality.
