Former economic planning secretary and economics professor Solita "Winnie" Monsod said the government should not grant incentives to mining firms because they will invest their money here anyway.

She said that, unlike export-oriented and "footloose" investments, mining firms come to the Philippines, a mineral-rich country.

She belied previous statements of the mining companies that they are a growth driver in the Philippine economy.

She spoke to Move.PH's Lala Rimando at the sidelines of the Punongbayan & Araullo business forum in Shangrila Hotel Manila on October 19.

  • Well said, Prof. Monsod. Our mining policies are really antiquated and not for the common good of the country.
