In this video I'll be demonstrating the essential parts required for a media center PC capable of playing back High Definition video content.

In the first part I'll show you the parts I've procured for the project, and give you an overview of the cost. Then in the second part I'll show you a time-lapse film of assembly. In real life this actually took around 15 minutes, which is enough for a quick dry-run assembly to see how your components go together. Once you're happy, a full assembly should take you around an hour.

In part two, I'll be showing you the software installation on the finished machine and then showing you the final product in Part 3.

  • Hi, I've noticed that the Zotac Synergy Edition has an inbuilt fan.

Other then the fan, is the motherboard different from the one you used?

  • @Notcholas I can't find details of the board you're talking about, can you provide the Zotac model number?

  • @Notcholas It looks like it uses the same processor and has similar specifications, but I think yours is a slightly later model.

You should see similar or better performance I would imagine.

  • Where did u get the aerials from and wirels card. Its mad u know for that cheap. And can it do 5.1 sound or u need like another big reciever thingy. And hw does the remote work.through wifi or I frred.coz app remotes piss takin imo. Plz reply ;-)

  • @strikerextreme Hi, I had the card lying around, the aerials were just a few pounds from eBay. It can do 5.1 audio over optical or coaxial into a surround sound system. The remote has a usb adapter which I didn't show, it's Infrared. The Boxee iOS app is free, so thats an option, or there's the free Logitech Touchmouse if you're going to be using Windows on the machine.

  • How do you keep it cool? Do you use a fan and the case you used does it have an intake or do you leave a side open?

  • @pately5315 There's no fan involved, it's completely silent. I drilled some vent holes above the CPU heatsink (not shown here) and the sides are left open for ventilation as well.
