It's a shame Charles Laughton did not direct more movies; I love this one (also love Robert Mitchum's singing voice) and this scene still really scares the heck out of me every time I see it.

I saw this movie on VHS when I was a kid. This scene stuck in my head forever. I'm no religous at all, but this movie is why I love that song.

I remember in the begining somewhere in this movie he also sings another hymn called "bringing in the sheaves". I tried to find it here on youtube but couldn´t find it :(

Robert Mitchum had a wonderful voice. This movie is a true classic, and one of the very best. Directed by Charles Laughton. One of my favs.

@batmancapedcrusader thanks! That makes sense. That was the only part of the movie that I didn't get

@RdVirus777 Not really. Rachel sings to counter Powell's singing, showing how strong she is and how her motives, unlike his, are pure.

i saw this as a kid, scared the shit out of me

this movie is so beautiful and poetic from beginning to end. If it weren't for Blade Runner (also beautifual and poetic) this would be my favorite movie of all time.

doesn't seem odd that she starts sing along with him?

so scary. still gives me chills when i see this film. i love when the old lady starts singing.

This is one DARNED good movie, well worth watching!! That's silent film star Lillian Gish staying up & guarding the children from Robert Mitchum.
Interesting thing; my Mom saw the picture when it came out in 1955, and to this day she can't bear to sing this particular hymn. In fact when the church was "trying out" new preachers, one had the congregation singing this hymn, though less than half of them did; evidently the preacher hadn't seen the film!!

This is one of the greatest scenes in cinema history. Throughout the entire movie Powell has been talking about the clash between 'love' and 'hate'. Now those two sides join in a biblical song, Powell representing hate and the granny representing love.

Yeah old Bob was pure hell.
One of the most underrated actors of all time.
He could charm the horns off a Billy goat.
We miss you Bob.
One my favorites scenes in the movie!

Its so creepy when he sings this, the carter family version is comforting but when he sings it, its foreboding and ominous
