I've recently updated my 87 project with the characteristic rheostatic braking sounds so typical of the prototype. The sound is triggered at low to middle speeds by rapid throttle reductions (the same action at higher speed triggers the neutral section sound seen in my other videos). All good fun.

  • Thank you. I recently bought one of the new Hornby / Lima 87's to make another 'mobile loudspeaker'. Thinks: double-headed 87's on a big rake of loaded BAA's.......

  • Thank you!

  • Good stuff, but the 87 doesnt have regenerative braking. It has rheostatic braking. This uses the tractions motors as Generators and connects them to resistor banks that increase load on the motors as braking takes place. It does not feed anything back into the overhead lines. The sound associated with rheo braking is fans cutting in to cool the rheo brake resistors.

  • @rickerbycourt Yes, I believe you're right. I've amended the title accordingly.

  • Hey what year was this taken and where wasit? What a clear day to sounded like some grouse inthe neighbouring field there....

  • superb! that looks very realistic with great sounds. the 87`s were my favourites. that looks a great lay-out you have. thanks for posting.

  • Looks and sounds Stunning

  • Brilliant!

  • @rickerbycourt aye its not like the pendos were they actually return it

  • @Class37Thrash Of course it does. Thats the return current though - not regeneration where the traction motors become generators during braking and feed current back into the supply.

  • @rickerbycourt erm some of the electricity does get put back into the OHLE via the wheels, through Red Bond wires and the contact return wire to the feeder stations
