Michael J. Newell Memorial Video

Michael Newell 1950 ~ 1992
This video is a tribute to Michael John Newell.
It was created shortly after his death by his friend Glenn.
The video is composed of still photographs, some raw footage, and video clips from an earlier production entitled "An Autumn Afternoon" produced in 1989. All in all, the video segments were assembled from three separate shoots: Coventry Rhode Island (1989), The Newell home in Sherman Connecticut (1989) and The Newell home on Cape Cod (1990).

Glenn began working on the video in late February of 1992. He worked with simple equipment, which consisted of two VCR decks and an audio cassette player, to produce this tribute.
Glenn claims to have been completely numbed in Irish Whiskey over the many days and weeks of production. Although he shed many tears after learning of Mike's passing, (Lisa Seligman-a very good woman-called him with bad news) he did not allow himself that measure of grief once production started.
He feared that if he let his emotions carry him away, he would never finish the work.

He says that after completing the video he did not have the courage to view the finished production for more than a year. When he did finally view it, the weight of Michael's passing, along with the feeling of lost potential, came crashing down on him so hard that it took him another year to write to Michael's mother (1994) and include a copy of the tape. He truly regretted waiting so long. The tape has been seen by very few people since in was created in '92.

Glenn plays the tape for himself every January 31st.

He says "I wish more than anything that Michael could have lived to grow old along with me and others of our generation. But that was never going to happen no matter how hard I wished for it. So I attempted to preserve his spirit in a way that would allow him to continue to be with us via television and the computer screen."

The video was digitally re-mastered in 2004 as the original tapes were breaking down with the passing of time. Nothing has been added or deleted from the original production including the timing of the audio track. There are plans to copyright the video so that it will live in the Library of Congress long after all of us are back together again with Mike for that big party in the sky.

Mike is still sadly missed by his many-many friends and members of his family.
