Galileo thermometer shows 20 degrees in 20 seconds!

http://twitter.com/RJFerret

"About 1593, Galileo constructed a thermoscope, using the expansion and contraction of air in a bulb to move water in an attached tube. Galileo also discovered that objects (glass spheres filled with aqueous alcohol) of slightly different densities would rise and fall." -Wikipedia

  • i dont understand how to understand what it shows

    explain please :)

  • @saqibd123new Sure, the bottommost floating sphere shows the temperature. So it starts out cold and they are all up top, then as it warms up, they lower. Each has a little metal tag with the actual degrees hanging from it. At room temperature, half will be up top and half at the bottom.

  • I have a Galileo Thermometer like this one too. Except, mine has a three legged chrome stand that it sits in. When anyone asks me, "How does that thing work?" I always tell them, "It works the opposite way that a mercury thermometer does, when its cold all the bulbs inside float and when its hot all the bulbs sink." This a wonderful example of how the relative density of an object can affect it’s buoyancy when the temperature of the liquid changes.
