@gamerStuyGS jazmer1 pretty much explained it. In this particular video though, John is being punished twice. The first punishment is for going over his time limit as a birthday present to Hank, and the second is for the nerdfighters getting Helen Hunt to see the Helen Hunt song and tweet Hank about it. Hank is also being punished for the second reason.

@gamerStuyGS They made rules during the first year they vlogged. Those rules included a rule that didn't allow them to make videos over 4 minutes. If they broke that rule they would be punished. The punishment would either be made by the other brother or by nerdfightaria or a combination thereof. Also Subscribe to them if you haven't already. DFTBA

forgive im a bit new to vlogbrothers(but im not new to ToF so thats kind of funny) but I am very curious about why these "punishments" are being dished out to each brother. I mean why are they being punished? I've been watching alot of vlogbrothers videos lately in no order whatsoever so I've probably heard the reason for these "punishments" but it just went flying right over my head. "Hi! I'm mister oblivious and you are?"
