  • @ 0:48 I was watching anime earlier and they said "chotto matte yo." Is that the same thing as "chotto matte kudasai"?

    1. chotto matte kudasai = Wait a moment, please.

    (Since kudasai(please) is used, the phrase is considered formal and is used to request something of someone.)

    2. chotto matte yo! = wait a moment! / wait a minute!

    (The kudasai (please) has been dropped and the emphasizer "yo" has been added instead) Think of the "yo" as meaning ( I tell you!) it adds more umph to your statement. In this case the phrase "chotto matte yo" has a tougher tone, it sounds more commanding.
