Senator Bob Dole US Army Reserve

Senator Dole poignantly talks about how he suffered his life-changing wounds in the hills of Italy during WWII as he attempted to retrieve his radioman who had already been shot. Dole's story focuses on his long recovery in VA hospitals back in the states as he says, "I was in the hospital 39 months, so most of my service was after the war ended." The senator finishes his very personal story as he intimately reveals that he has only looked in a mirror twice in his life since he first caught a glimpse of himself six decades earlier, "because what I saw that day scared me."

Ever since I read A Soldier's Story, the story of Bob Dole, I have had such a respect for him. He is a hero!

Sen. Dole, I watched your performance at the confirmation hearing for Gen. Shinseki. You are too far over the hill to be of value to any veterans. Your Dole-Shalala Commission scratched the surface and ignored what was really wrong in the System. Shinseki said it correctly, "leadership." There has been none for combat veterans whose primary care in PTSD never existed. The benefits issues should be addressed after the "healing" of the physically wounded and PTSD treatment.
