This slideshow/movie is dedicated to all the Maya users out there who have been inspired by the 3D animated animals of the big production companies to try to do Maya Fur (even if the big ones don't use Maya Fur to do their fur). Are you someone testing your skills at perfecting Fur attributes? Do you want to see examples of other work from people who also don't know what they're doing with Fur? I know I did -- just to see if the term "fluffy" was within reach! After hours and hours of tweaking maps and adjusting attribute sliders (and then the render time per frame ended up being about 7 minutes), I got some fur, but I still don't think my wolf model looks anywhere near life-like and believable.
If you happen to be a person who found this video while you were looking for something to compare your furry model to, and you think yours is better, then please give me a hint on how you did it! Critiques are welcome (preferably on the fur)! And if you're in the middle of a project with fur right now -- gooood luck to you!

  • what's with the cheese 80;s music?? you're so out of touch with music.... lol

  • @ledarksparck Lol, are you kidding? Old music rocks! :)

  • Well for a start, you might want to fix the anatomy before worry about fur :P The legs are a tad too long ^^

But yus, I totally agree with you. Fur is a pain in the ass, however because it's so good in the movies, they take... ages to render :P Have you figured out how to do bulkier long hair? Your wolfie needs longer belly hair and neck hair. But, it looks loads better than those wolves in Alpha and Omega, haha XD

  • @Melazee01 Thanks for the critique. I am currently working on a long-haired cat. I've found that if you start with one of the preset fur descriptions (pick one that best matches the fur you're trying to make), it's much easier to get what you want with a bit less trial and error. I think I started from scratch on this wolf, and yeah, it sure was a pain in the ass, lol.

  • haha side effects !! i wonder how you feel afther 90 frames tho xD anyhow creat work wish i can be as good as you oneday... oneday mabe !

  • It's rewarding when you start getting the fur right, but it sure is tedious, tiring, and boring for most of the way there.
