Here I'm scraping in a Myford manual cylindrical grinder (built '61) with a BIAX BL40.
Along the way, I show how the points develop.
This is the first part of a work in progress ...

  • where do you get the BIAX here in EU? And is there a good source for edge rules and test flats? Do you have any opinion on the Knuth surface plates?

  • @Axbent

The Biax is made in Germany. So I'd just mail to biax . de and ask for a dealer. But any serious tool dealer should have them. The price of a new one is NOT funny!

Knuth is a China-importer. Schut . com has reasonable quality (albeit he partly also imports from Asia)

  • Does the iron hang over the ends? Did you scrap any tapper on to the ways and were you able to tapper scrap it flat?

  • @prindleboat

    What is "tapper"?

And yes, the master is longer than the guide.

  • How do you blue the high spots? Thanks...

  • There are two techniques.

The most common is the transfer technique:

You blue a master (the camelback shown in the vid) and rubb the master against the work (see part #2). Where there are high spots on the work, the blue deposits on the work and .. voila!

There are basically 3 kinds of spots:

High, medium and low. A bit hard to describe in words (and takes some experience to distinguish them). In short:

High: pale and a dark border

    Medium: dark

    Low: pale

Once, I'll make a video about that ...

  • @MuellerNick he means taper, as in cone.

  • Thank you for your response! I understand the concept of applying blue better now. I will look forward for your video.

  • You're welcome!

    Those waiting for further parts:

I'm stuck with the camel back I got lented. I discovered that it is twisted and I have to scrape it. :-)

Maybe I'll make a video about that in the meantime ...

  • great work !! thanks for sharing your knowledge.
