I think we had so much fun with the Puritani contest, we should try out a differnt opera. This time I choose Verdi's La Traviata, and the aria is the final cabaletta in act I, Sempre Libera. I started each one right at the introduction to the cabaletta segment. I am sure I will hear about it from the masses! But once again since we are working with video material not every soprano can be included, some sopranos such as Sills and Gruberova have videos released on commercial dvd, therefore, I am not including them. I am going to follow tradition here and use a score of 1-5 for two catagories singing/characterization Here are the singers I have included and the dates of the performances:
June Anderson - 2000
Joan Sutherland - 1975
Daniela Dessi - 1994
Ileana Cotrubas - 1981
Stefania Bondadelli - 2004
Cecilia Gasdia - 1986
Elena Mosuc - 2001
Darina Takova - 2001
Renata Scotto - 1973
Anna Netrebko - 2003
Mary Dunleavy - 2001
Nelly Miricioiu - 1993
Mariella Devia - 1999
Dimitra Theodossiou - 2000

  • As an update, I have added a second concert performance of June Anderson in this aria, this time from 1987.

  • Three and a half stars? LOL! In the balcony or the first row, listening to June Anderson is like being in ecstacy.

  • June's vibrato is unique in that it stays at a constant speed throughout the voice, unlike most voices. She sounds fantastic here.

  • she sounds shrill and strained sry... 2/3

  • I don't care what anyone else has to say, 5/5 all the way. I know she's not the best in this clip but she's an amazing and talented artist! Watch her in The Passion of Bel Canto here on YouTube and you'll understand!

  • That tenore has the heaviest voice, like ever. -.-'

  • Adoro la Anderson ma qui proprio no mi piace!

  • June Anderson was a great singer but the Sutherland comparisons didn't always work. Her Violetta has too much vibrato and is too big and clumsy, with no delicacy and expressive acting. Anna Moffo is far superior as Violetta. June sings a great Lucia & Konstanza and her bel canto was always terrific but she had no Verdi training, and as such she can't sing Violetta.
