  • you do know the phoenix missle wasn't a accurate missle right? and its a situation like the F-117,too much maintnence cost...

  • ive heard that also,reason is the F-14 has something like 140 parts while the F-18 has around 30,i also heard the F-18 preforms better in overall dog fighting

  • Not commenting on which aircraft is the better one, 18 vs 14, but I did hear a few years back that the man-hours for maintenance is far less for the 18 vs the 14.

  • Oh.... and as for the AIM-54 Phoenix missle... the reason it was never fitted to other platforms is because it was old and outdated. With AWAC mission, the AMRAAM performed just as well, is cheaper to produce, lighter and more aerodynamic. But... I was wrong about one thing. I previously stated that the 18 can land slower, but that is incorrect. The 18E's carrier app. is 138knots. The 14D is 125knots. Too bad you didn't catch the one mistake I made.

  • Finally some stats on the two planes. The 18E, in its A-A config, has a CAP radius of 410nm w/ 40m TOS. CAP at 200nm was 2h15m TOS. The 14D had a CAP radius of 665nm w/ 15m TOS. CAP at 200nm was 1h45 TOS. SO, the 18E is the better aircraft. The average CAP is done between 180-225nm. Ferry range of the 18E is 2200, the 14D is 1900. So again, the 18E is better. Like I said... dont let the facts get in the way of your ignorant opinion.
