I believe in dreams
In dreaming
In believing that there is a reason to why I wake up in the morning
That there is a reason behind getting out of bed
Just to deal with the same "He said, she said" type of shit
And a whole bunch of other nonsense that I really don't get
But get this

I believe in dreams
Like the ones in bed time stories
That I never remember having as a kid
Like
I envision myself being everything that my father has never taught me
So that possibly
One day I could rest my child on the corner of his bed,
Kiss him on his head,
Read his favorite book to him until he drifts slowly to sleep,
Tuck him carefully underneath his cartoon covered sheets,
And when he wakes up in the morning
I will ask him about his dream
And if I'm lucky
He'll tell me
"Daddy, last night I dreamt I was a spaceman"
Those are the type of dreams I believe in
Ones where you shoot for the stars and hope only to land amid the clouds
Except now
I believe in shooting for the sun
And hoping to somehow catch Jupiter's orbit
So that when I land,
I land on a planet big enough to hold the weight of my dreams
I believe that when dreams come true
And trust me they do
They are more beautiful than the sacrifices made to get there

I believe in dreams
In having
Aspirations
So I aim my sights higher than star bright lights in the nighttime sky
So that I always have something to shoot for
My dreams consist of knowledge
and wisdom;
I know both only come with time
And every so often I am reminded
Of how precious it is to be capable
Of dreaming

After all
It is a luxury
Afforded to those with opportunity
That third world countries don't always have
A luxury that was taken away from my 19 year old friend the moment he was diagnosed with cancer
When dreams are cut short
When they wither away like the final petal falling from an unfortunate flower
It's easy to live in the nightmares of reality

So I try to dream
of dreams as big as Martin Luther Kings
of peace and equality
Trying not to take my abilities for granted
I dream like captain planet
Hoping my mother earth lives long enough to see the next generation of dreamers
Sometimes I dream like father time
Like my grandmother who could've used a little more time to see her great grandchildren grow
This is what I know
And what I believe
There is an inherent power
In dreams
