About once a year Tampa Fire Rescue conducts a hazardous materials technician course to train firefighters and paramedics how to safely respond to and deal with the serious consequences of a chemical emergency.
Today Tampa Fire Rescue had 22 hazardous materials technician students participate in a full scale exercise to allow them to practice with the knowledge and skills they have learned over the past 4 weeks of the course. All of the students are Tampa firefighters. They are taking this course to be able to serve as members of the hazardous materials team. The scenario they were dealing with today was a large chlorine leak at a facility in the Port of Tampa.
During the 4 week course the firefighters are taught chemistry, how to use sophisticated gas monitoring meters, they learn how to select and work inside of the bulky chemical protective suits and how to properly decontaminate chemicals off of crew and gear.
Whether an accident or intentional, the hazardous materials team is prepared to respond to a variety of chemical and biological emergencies.
