Local tragedy as Marrickville Council chops down a beautiful healthy lemon scented gum tree in Cambridge Street Marrickville. The Marrickville Greens councillors attempted to save this tree, but Labor and Independent Councillors voted to chop it down.

  • I wonder what the official proposal cited? Was it because it was a danger to power-lines? Did they declare the tree over the safe limit of rot/dead-wood? Did property owners complain about limited "view"? Did they squeeze a pathetic vote because supposedly the tree drops branches and it is a danger to the neighbourhood?

    Whatever the case is, it certainly is sad to see that tree go. BTW, to me this Gum Tree looks beautiful, great classic shape, excellent size.

  • This is fantastic. I think it's good that they're getting rid of those horrible trees; they're ugly, they're dangerous and they use more water than much nicer deciduous trees. Look at how far Israel has come with trees, the nation was 97% bare a century ago. Now, beautiful pine forests cover much of the land. We should be copying their model to replace ugly native trees with European trees.
