Sometimes a regular tig welding cup will not let you extend your electrode far enough without losing gas shielding. Here is a tip for how to get gas out there up to an inch. Using a #12 gas lens style ceramic tig cup with a few modifications

    you may need to also cut a disc of scotchbrite along with some screen to have a really good blanket of argon . you cant walk the cup or it will arc out, but it will give better coverage of gas

    Just FYI these large "shorty" #12 gas cups are $ 32 a piece (@ CMI) they use regular #9 / #20 size torch parts....

    would you say you use a gas lense more often than "standard" gas hardware? i'm running ~20 on the gas right now with my WP-20, and have been thinking of getting a gas lense setup off ebay to see if it'll help me save gas since i only have an 80 cu/ft bottle, so i only get ~4 hours or so from 1 bottle before needing to swap it. if i could get down to 15 or 12 that'd be a pretty decent increase. also, have you tried the ebay gas lenses vs a quality name brand lense?

    The stick out from the end of the cup to the point of the tungsten should be the inside diameter of cup. -Lincoln Electric Welding School

    so does using a defuser help in the cup help prevent the tungsten from turning white, (or oxidized looking) as well, ive been fighting this problem for months and im getting frustrated as hell
