Why should you wear seat belts

The figures are familiar: 40,000 people die each year in car accidents, the leading cause of death for people under the age of 35. Safety belts can prevent death in about half of these accidents. If you know this and are still not wearing a safety belt, you may need to ask yourself why not. But first, let's look at what happens when a car crashes.

The Human Collision
Imagine running as fast as you can - into a wall. You'd expect to get pretty banged up. Do you think you could stop yourself if the wall suddenly loomed up when you were two feet away from it? This is exactly the situation you face when the front of your car hits something at only 15 miles an hour. The car stops in the first tenth of a second, but you keep on at the same rate you were going in the car until something stops you - the steering wheel, dashboard or windshield - if you're not wearing your safety belt.. Bad enough at 15 miles an hour, but a 30 miles you hit "the wall" four times as hard as you would at 15. Or to put it another way.

  • Airbags deploy if they are working, yes, but they are meant to protect the head of the driver or the passenger from hitting the panels, not to take the full brunt of a body slamming in to them.. So yes, use seatbelts.

  • WAT A GREAT COMMERCIAL!

  • @DynastyPercussion yeah also i have a friend who didnt wear a seat belt her mother crashed the car they both didnt wear seat belts because the mom grew up when the cars didnt have any and the daughter just didnt do it and luckly they survived with minor injurys and her mom got a cheker bored face because the airbag hit her and it wouldnt have happen if she was wearing one and her daughter hit the passenger airbag and luckly it cought her before she fly out the window and they where going 45mph

  • @ChrisBennett18 It's funny how people think of themselves as rebel or "cool" for not wearing a seat belt.

My friend and her mother thought the same thing as them. They have been dead for 2 years now.

The funny part of all this is that they think a car crash couldn't kill them or hurt them that badly; they were going about 48 mph and hit another car head on and my friend flew out the windshield which severed her right arm and leg off of her body and her mother's head was crushed. idiots. RIP
