Thats because conservatives in nature are closed minded and racist. They hate gays, minorities, and atheists. They are people filled with hate and anger. Progressives on the other hand are open minded.

I understand what you're saying quest, I consider myself a "progressive" but I disagree that all conservatives hate gays and minorities. Take California, a largely progressive state...we still voted FOR Proposition 8, which to me is anti-gay. A lot of democrats are homophobic, its not just a partisan issue. I have a lot of family that is conservative, voted for John McCain, and voted Against Prop 8 because they felt it was hateful. Don't assume all conservatives are anti-gay.

Most of the "Yes on 8" campaign was actually driven by conservative fund-raisers and misleading TV ads using conservative talking points ("gays will take over schools and indoctrinate your children!"). Kudos to your GOP family who didn't swallow the bait. Lots of others did. Few liberals did.

Coastal CA is largely liberal, but the valley and inland empire is VERY conservative. You could drop Bakersfield, Merced or Tulare in west Texas and they would fit right in, ideologically.

There's some truth to that, but I note that some of your interviewees did allow that there were valuable aspects to conservative philosophy. I grew up GOP, before I awoke to reality. At one time, personal responsibility WAS considered a conservative value, the original opposition to entitlements--sadly, as you note, no longer. Now it's about the "other" getting what's "mine." Greed and dogmatism are the hallmarks of conservatism today. If any old-cons are left, they're silent.
