Big deal Tolkien is still an amazing writer and should not be underestimated for the middle earth he created, he still deserves credit for his creativity and amazing work, very few writers can top what he has done. He may not have been the first but he has done his bit for fantasy and he did it damn well.

How is Tolkien South African?

He was born to English parents who were both English citizens. That makes him English.

Being born in a kennel doesn't make him a dog.

Tolkien considered himself to be completely English (except for that one ancestor on his father's side who originally came from Lower Saxony), and he had no love whatsoever for the so-called 'British Commonwealth.'

JRR Tolkien was a West Midlander, a Mercian and a great Englishman.

People consider him the founder, not because people are arrogant but because his work is considered the best; he is a professor of English for gods-sake. His work is divine, and yes, I'm quite aware he isn't the founder, but he is the founder of: High-fantasy.
