Behaviour and politics are separate things. While, yes, politics ruin everything and is the main reason this world is in a downward spiral, this is more about the primitive sociobiological "need" people have to breed. While breeding does not necessarily have to related to consumerism, it definitely makes people think they need to consume in order to satisfy their offspring's 'needs'.
