Garrison changes "And one by one we drop away"

Garrison (An Garastún in Irish) is a small village in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, at the eastern end of Lough Melvin. In the 2001 Census it had a population of 357 people. It was a thriving town before "The Troubles" when it was cut off from the Republic of Ireland after the roads were blown up by the British Security Forces in an attempt to stop the transportation of explosives into Northern Ireland. When cross-border business halted, the town suffered from lack of trade and went into decay. A further IRA campaign displaced a sector of the population and bombed many of the remaining buildings. The British government decided to provide funds to rebuild in the early ninties. It is only since the roads reopened in 1994 that Garrison has found its feet again. This video recalls a visit to the village by Patrick Treacy in the summer of 1993.

This was 1993 just after the last dance in Fonsie's hall. I don't think the government donated much money to rebuild the village. The American Fund for Ireland was helpful though. Nice to see the old village.
