Strength = Durability
By Rob Shaul, CSCS
Marmot athlete and Exum Guide Christian Santelices depends on his body for a living. In the gym, the best thing I can do for Christian and all my athletes is make them stronger.
I believe increasing Christian's overall strength will improve his mountain performance. But perhaps even more important, the strength Christian builds in the gym will make him more durable. The reality of being an Exum Guide is thousands upon thousands of steps walking up and down steep hills over rocky, uneven terrain with a moderately heavy pack. With every step comes the opportunity for a sprained ankle, twisted knee, tweaked lower back, let alone the chance from overuse injuries from all that impact. Strong legs and core help avoid injuries, and keep Christian in the mountains, earning his living.
In this short clip Christian is finishing the last of 7 rounds of a three exercise circuit: dead lifts - for full body and core strength, box jumps for explosive power, and weighted situps - more core strength. He makes it look easy. It isn't.

NOT well done, crap deadlift technique. Setting your camcorder on black & white does not make you Mark Twight.

It is funny how Biomechanics work and how physics imposes its laws on us. If you watch the video right before he begins the movement, he sits a little lower than he should but when it is time to lift the weight, he automatically and if not unconsciously position himself like he is supposed to.
He set up is wrong. He should set up him self so that he feels tension on his posteriour chain. Shoulder over the bar. chin perpedicular to the ground, lumbar spine and the rest.

You set up with your knees against your arms, but once you start pulling your knees buckle inwards. (just saying)
