A Speedboat Blasts Down the North Saskatchewan River in Edmonton June '09 By David Cure-Hryciuk

A sure sign of summer - I spotted a speedboat hauling it down the North Saskatchewan river in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. For those of you who don't know, the city I call home is so far north that it's the northernmost metropolitan area in North America with over one million people. There are 17 hour days in the summer and only 7 hour days in the winter and it often gets below -30C (-12F) in the winter. This warm weather and fun on the water was welcome relief!!!

Yes, I agree, Edmonton is awesome! I've heard about the Edmonton Fire Department's rescue boat launch site by the old Rossdale power plant site. It sounds like these 2 guys they kicked off the river had already polished off most of their beer cooler. What a crazy thing to do! An old beat up couch on 2 large tire tubes floating down the river?! Maybe they should get a canoe and take their insane drunken times elsewhere!

I love this city as well! Edmonton is my hometown and I wish people wouldn't be so stereotypical about us! We are cosmopolitan, a million city, cultured, not every Edmontonian is a redneck and despite being an oil town, we have the largest urban parks system in the world!

Edmonton kicks butt. I grew up here, moved to BC and it was nice, but I had to come back here. That could possible have been the fire department, they have a badass boat as well, it lauches by Rossdale station. I saw them kick 2 dudes off the river while I was fishing Dawson park. The guys had an old couch on 2 big tire tubes, and a cooler of beer, no life jackets though so they got grounded by the FD.
