During their first real U.S. tour, we convinced The Acorn to play an Indianapolis show at Radio Radio. Indianapolis is often best left to be a follower versus a groundbreaker, so while it was one of the best shows we've ever seen, it wasn't seen by many. The Acorn, knowing they were gonna take their lumps on that tour, never batted an eyelash about the low turnout. And as I said and you know if you are familiar with the band, the low turnout was no reflection on The Acorn's talent or incredible songwriting - merely my sheltered, Midwestern city's lack of knowledge on deeper-indie/folk, new, upcoming, and insanely talented bands you won't find on Clear Channel radio. That's ok too Indianapolis, I'll give you a pass as I hold you as a product of your environment at times, but if they ever come back, and you don't turn out, well...we're gonna have words.

Glory Hope Mountain was one of 2008's best releases you probably missed. Released by the small Canadian label Paper Bag Records, the album was essentially a beautiful research project in which lead singer Rolf Klausener got in touch with his mother and their South American history and roots. Each song takes influence from the life story of Gloria Montoya Esperanza, as told by her son. Glory Hope Mountain is part historical narrative and part fairy tale, but the result is an intensely personal and heartfelt record full of wonderful, rich folk songs.

You can read even more about it in our interview with Rolf.

  • Love this band and song but can't help thinking the rhythm section isn't quite working ! Would love to see the band play this song with the drummer from the wild beasts. I'm sure the result would be unbelieveable... Just a dream !!!!
