Mormon doctrine proclaims that the New Jerusalem, also referred to as Zion (see Moses 7: 62) is the place where the Saints, and the twelve tribes of Israel will gather (see Revelation 21: 1-5). Christ will reign from the New Jerusalem as well as the old Jerusalem during the Millennium (see Micah 4: 2).

Joseph Smith received revelation in July of 1831 that the New Jerusalem and a temple would be built in Independence, Missouri and that the gathering of Israel would begin (Doctrine and Covenants 57:1-3). Since the term Zion also refers to the "pure in heart," when Christ comes again there could be many places in the world that would be referred to as Zion, because the people have accepted the gospel and follow the commandments, but the New Jerusalem is to be a center place or capital city for the pure in heart.

The building of the New Jerusalem and the rebuilding of Jerusalem must happen before the second coming of Christ. A proclamation from the Twelve Apostles in 1845 states:

He will assemble the Natives, the remnants of Joseph in America; and make them a great, and strong, and powerful nation: and he will civilize and enlighten them, and will establish a holy city, and temple and seat of government among them, which shall be called Zion.

And there shall be his tabernacle, his sanctuary, his throne, and seat of government for the whole continent of North and South America for ever. In short, it will be to the western hemisphere what Jerusalem will be to the eastern.

The city of Zion, with its sanctuary and priesthood, and the glorious fulness of the gospel, will constitute a standard which will put an end to jarring creeds and political wranglings, by uniting the republics, states, provinces, territories, nations, tribes, kindred, tongues, people and sects of North and South America in one great and common bond of brotherhood. Truth and knowledge shall make them free, and love cement their union. The Lord also shall be their king and their lawgiver; while wars shall cease and peace prevail for a thousand years. (Encyclopedia of Mormonism, ed. Daniel H. Ludlow, 1992, p.1010)

Ultimately, however, the complete fulfillment of this prediction will not take place until Jesus Christ returns to reign, since He is the one whose right it is to rule from Zion.

  • I'm curious as to why such a prolific LDS YouTuber like yourself would post a video which essentially advertises for the Temple Lot church, especially since they repudiate so many LDS beliefs. Care to enlighten me?

  • I also have a film about the Community of Christ Temple. Regardless of the differences in our beliefs, the members of the Temple Lot Church and of the Community of Christ (and members of other religions, for that matter) are good people. In getting to know them, I've learned of how some members of our faith have made very insensitive statements regarding the beliefs of these two religions.

My emphasis is more about unity and brotherhood despite doctrinal differences.

  • Or to put it another way, I'm more interested in highlighting the things that unite us, rather than the things that divide us.

  • I hope I am present in the day Zion comes to be. I would abandon all of my possessions for such an undertaking.

  • @SethAdamSmith Plus they are still our cousins in Faith.. Many members of the church have no knowledge that there are other Mormon sects...

  • No the CofC was once the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, the Temple lot is owned by the Church of Christ-Temple Lot

  • Nice to see religious tolerance re Seth's comments and posts. So unlike what I usually see, especially from the "you bad we good" crowd.

  • Hi... You can see that some people never went to independence, mo. The Church of Christ, now called community of Christ is something different then the LDS church...

I pass this temple of the COC church everyday and every day I see the spot where the LDS Church will build a temple! If it comes to that point then it is time to meet someone special again...

  • MAZAL TOV!

  • I've been to this site it didn't feel like Zion to me .

  • @THELDSLIFE , and quoting scripture from the D&C is pointless as I believe JS is a fraud. Of course he is going to have scripture to make you think I'm wicked for trying to speak truth. He wants you to believe that people who don't agree with the church are wicked...That is complete nonsense! Read the words of christ, not Joe Smith!

  • @THELDSLIFE , I joined the LDS church originally for the same reason most people did. They were presented with new information that sounded good. Little do they know it was not all new information. Had they known about the Kabbalah they would see where the ideas of the spirit world, terrestrial, telestial, and celestrial kingdoms came from. And that explains the knowledge JS learned when he joined the freemasons. And why his dad and bro were masons, let alone Brigham Y. and the other witnesses.

  • @DivineMagix

"...treasure up wisdom in your bosoms, lest the wickedness of men reveal these things unto you by their wickedness, in a manner which shall speak in your ears with a voice louder than that which shall shake the earth; but if ye are prepared ye shall not fear. D&C 38:30 - the truth is that there ARE answers but you chose not to be patient.

The Lord warned us all against men who would try to convince us away from his established church.

Now the pathway is a much easier one.
