About this project:

I recently sculpted Matt Damon for the Jimmy Kimmel Live! show (and for Matt's 40th birthday).
For this piece, I tried to capture a look somewhere between all the expressions Matt can make with his very animated face. The result is a sculpture that sometimes looks like he's about to smile, sometimes smirking, sometimes irritated. The idea was to have the expression go with whatever was being said on the show. I like the piece- this is classical portraiture and the expression changes with the lighting.

THE MATERIAL:
I sculpt exclusively in Cx5, a material I invented and have available at store.adambeaneindustries.com Cx5 handles like fine clay when warm and is hard as plastic when cool. My two favorite properties of the material are: First, it needs NO armature! (regardless of the size of the piece- it is totally self-supporting), and second, when it's cool, you can be as rough as you like with it without worrying about mushing up your details. In fact, I scrub my sculptures vigorously with dish soap and a toothbrush to keep them clean throughout the sculpting process- something you absolutely cannot do with ordinary clay. It is liberating to be able to hold a sculpture in your hand as it takes form instead of having it be stuck on an armature. Cx5 can be reused indefinitely and is completely non-toxic.

Wow, I'm flabbergasted, this Cx5 is really much better than the resin I use. Ok, you need to warm it up but how many time you have to sculpt before Cx5 get as hard as nails? electric skillet is always necessary? If not, the next question is about international shipping... :)

Cx5 gets hard as nails as it cools, and soft again as it is warmed up- all the way to liquid when hot, over and over, as many times as you like.

You can read about it on the adambeaneindustries website; just click on Cx5. Also, there is more information on our FAQ page. Hope that helps!

Cx5 "is" an essential element to great sculpture - if you work small scale figures and portraits and like to work with warm to hot media that is able to take as fine a detail as you could ever want and has massive working stability. Until i got my first block i didn't realise how that last statement appied to me. I am a convert from sculpey, wax, clay and many other media. Cx5 needs more gear to work that most other materials but it is soo worth it. The vids show it off beautifuly.

You do not need to be great at figure drawing to sculpt well. I've seen people who can hardly draw a strait line with a ruler do amazing life sculptures in clay. However drawing, lots of it, really helps with the overall visualisation of your piece and how you will get to construct it. I do cartoon style drawing, pencil with brush pen over it to work out my blocking and material folds etc. I dont say you have to be good at it but drawing does help no matter how rough.

If someone walked in and saw all those pictures they'd think you were a Matt Damon stalker.

A great product.. But saying "an essential element for great sculpture" is just pretentious and completely false.
