Early on the morning of Friday 12 September Barbara and I flew on American Airlines 757 aircraft from Miami via San Juan, Puerto Rico to Caracas, Venezuela. At Simon Bolivar International Airport in Maiquetia near Caracas we met our friends Betsy and Lee who had been traveling elsewhere in the area earlier in the week. On Friday and Saturday nights we stayed at the J. W. Marriott Hotel in downtown Caracas.

Early on the morning of Saturday 13 September we all flew an Aserca Airlines DC-9 from Caracas to Puerto Ordaz, the major industrial port on the Orinoco River in eastern Venezuela. (Puerto Ordaz is one of the two cities which merged to become Ciudad Guayana. Often you will see the latter name on maps of Venezuela.) From there we flew south on a 12-passenger single prop Cessna Grand Caravan aircraft to make two passes by 3,212-foot-high (979-meter-high) Angel Falls, the world's highest waterfall.

As you might imagine, the bottom of Angel Falls, which is a staggering 15 times higher than Niagara Falls, was obscured by clouds. But we could clearly see and photograph the top of the falls, with the water falling off the magnificent tepui (plateau) into the clouds below!

After flying by Angel Falls, we landed on the paved air strip at the nearby hamlet of Canaima. There we were given a ride on a motorized canoe to visit some other, much smaller waterfalls. After a wonderful lunch at a local tourist lodge, we returned to the Canaima Airport to fly in a two-prop 10-seater aircraft to Puerto Ordaz (Ciudad Guayana). After a 3-hour layover there we flew on the same Aserca Airlines DC-9 aircraft back to Caracas.

On the evening of Sunday 14 September Barbara and I flew a partially-empty American Airlines Airbus A-300 from Caracas back to Miami. It was a wonderful weekend, and now we have both seen all four of the world's major waterfalls: Niagara Falls, Iguassu Falls, Victoria Falls and Angel Falls.
