Roland Dyens - Libra Sonatine: I India (played by Chandra Rajagopal)

From my Solo Guitar Recital - 02/06/09, United University Church, USC (Los Angeles)

From my program notes:

Lastly we have French composer Roland Dyens Libra Sonatine, a work he wrote in 1980, intended to mirror his harrowing experience during a heart bypass. The first movement (India) echoes the heart palpitations and terrors of surgery, with its alien harmonies and irregular rhythms. The second (Largo) is a jazz ballad, but also representation of the anaesthetized post-op Dyens wandering and dreamy. The last (Fuoco) expresses the composers elation and renewed fight for life, and provides a stirring conclusion to this modern classic of the guitar repertoire.

  • Really impresive! Its a very difficult song, beautiful interpretation too, congratulations!

  • Thanks so much for your comment - it took me months to interpret it correctly (or at least to a level I was happy with!)

  • what i wanted to say with my cryptical words (excuse for my bad english, i am german!): you are not only 'playing' the piece, but really 'living' it. and that is something which - concerning to my understanding - goes far beyond a mere technical performance.

  • I like it! the interpretation is very good!

  • Yes yes yes yes yes! This is the way this is supposed to sound. The technical difficulty doesn't get in the way of the music. Just wonderful.

  • @crajagop1407 Impressive!! Congratulations!

I am starting to play this piece and I would love to be able to play it half as good as you do.

  • Wonderful playing. As Laertessd said, you're really in the moment with the music and this is the mark of a musician.

  • I think Dyens would be proud.
