This is the first leatherback sea turtle nest laid at Carolina Beach in at least 20 years. A crowd in excess of 200 people eagerly awaited the hatching of this nest and their patience was finally rewarded on Monday night, Sept. 14, 2009. The nest yielded 71 live hatchlings including one that was recovered during the excavation on Sept. 10. This video includes both the hatching and excavation of this nest. The hatching was shot using iinfrared light.
It is amazing that the baby lasted 3 days in the nest!
