This morning, Annie found a hummingbird with an injured wing on our driveway. He seemed to be fading until we brought him inside and began feeding him drops of sugar water (dipping our fingers into the water and letting him drink from the drops). We've taken him to Wildcare in San Rafael (http://www.wildcarebayarea.org) where learned he is an adult Allen's hummingbird. They will try to nurse him back to health and then release him near our home. If they're successful, we'll see if we can capture it on video.

  • YourFan, how's the bird doing? Have you found answers to your questions? In our case, we were told that a broken wing is not good. Their wings must beat so fast that they're not likely to heal from a break.

  • We just got word that 72 hours after rescuing Hum he decided it was time to leave his body. No doubt hes now flying free where there are no obstacles. Go Hum!

  • At least you tried to help him. Hope his offspring and relatives visit you often. Kudos for doing all you could! :o)

  • Ah, thanks! Yes, we see lots of hummingbirds all the time. So I guess the word's out that we care.

  • It's great to know that there are other people out there that care for birds and other animals, I have hand red 6 baby black bird becouse the vets would not take them.

    Good job for trying.

  • Amazing!!!

  • I just rescued a baby humming birds that my cats were playing with...hes not alot injured he just has a broken wing and cant fly..im not sure what to do..Any advice..Please help..And where can you buy nectar?

  • I'm so glad you helped him! Good work! Most birds need warmth and hydration when they are injured. Taking him to WildCare (or Lindsay Wildlife Museum) is the right thing to do. I work at another wild bird hospital and know that the faster you can get injured or orphaned animals to a hospital, the better chance they have to recover.

  • hehe Yep, must be! Probably known around hummingbird circles as a "Day Spa" with a sugar water buffet! LOL Your welcome! :o)
