Looking up at the mountains, you can see the line where the ice starts. Last few shots are from the intersection of Routes 515 and 94 in the center of Vernon, looking up at the top of the mountain where Highland Lakes is. The location indicated on the map is the top of that hill.

  • Hmmm... I wonder if I knew your parents... When I was "little" I used to ski there almost every day - back in "those days" I was part of the Vernon Twp. Volunteer Ambulance Corp. and they gave us free passes because we used to take so many injuries out of there. Then some fool decided they should have their own ambulance so they could charge folks for a ride to the hospital. Nice - pay to ski, then pay again (10 times as much!) if you get hurt. Capitalism at it's best...

  • Rolled a log down the hill at Mountain Creek once as a kid-not a good idea-ha.

  • Was it still "Vernon Valley" when you were a kid? Hell, I was there when they BUILT the place...

  • @JerzZDog Well, I was a bigger kid. The water park was there off season and that log put a hurting on the fence. I had no idea and never saw anything move so fast in my life-looked like computer animation. Really stupid. Going back to my brother's time: He remembers the Playboy Facility being open. Did the Creek or that big brown Bunny building come first? That thing is burned in his brain-ha.

  • First there was Great Gorge, down by McAfee, then Vernon Valley, then the Playboy Club. There were all these plans to connect them with a monorail or cablecar and turn Vernon into a "Place to Go". Didn't work out too well. Now Intrawest steps in and tires the same thing... I'll bet that new hotel is closed by 2012.

  • Calling on N.J. hunters to speak up against baiting bear with human and pet food in the woods. Unfortunately, this is the norm. The first 264 kills showed up at the weigh stations right on time but unless you kill every bear, all the others that hit your pile will most likely come out again looking for what they got a taste for in residential garbage. This could go on for generations. I know there are some real hunters left-please speak up. Please see Donuts for Boo Boo N.J. on YouTube.

  • Personally, I don't think there should be a bear hunt at all. I like bears. But that's the human mentality - if something annoys you, gotta kill it.

  • Well, before the 2010 calendar year ended, the Mountain Creek resort was sold back to Crystal Springs [formerly GAR, if I am correct] and Gene Mulvihill, whom [again, if I am correct] owned the park before selling it to Intrawest in [1997? 1998?].

IIRC, wasn't the closure of Vernon Valley and Action Park due to the parent company's financial issues, partially [largely?] agitated by the massive issues at Action Park?

Wish Intrawest kept some of the rides that were later removed. Sigh.

  • i go there everyweek end 2 ski at mountain creek wen my parents were little they used 2 ski there 2

  • @JerzZDog That's funny-and never knew a thing about the monorail. History repeating itself so quickly-whoa. Yeah, that hotel is going the way of The Shining. The want 200+ on off season. I guess there are ghosts to pay utilities-those rooms are empty. "The New Vail"-remember that-man. Another big brown building underused. No bunnies this time. Areas beauty still eclipses. Thanks so much for the info-going to be a lot of "No Sh*t"?!s when I tell people this stuff.

  • @JerzZDog Yeah-agree, gotta call Chris and tell him where you live and how you feel about this. Especially guys like you who have seen it all up here and know what they are talking about. Stories come out in staff meetings, etc. so it's well worth it. 609-292-6000.
