An aircraft carrier is a warship designed with a primary mission of deploying and recovering aircraft, acting as a sea-going airbase. Aircraft carriers thus allow a naval force to project air power great distances without having to depend on local bases for staging aircraft operations. They have evolved from wooden vessels used to deploy a balloon into nuclear powered warships that carry dozens of fixed and rotary wing aircraft.
Following the war, the scope of carrier operations continued to increase in size and importance. Supercarriers, typically displacing 75,000 tonnes or greater, have become the pinnacle of carrier development. Most are powered by nuclear reactors and form the core of a fleet designed to operate far from home. Amphibious assault ships, such as USS Tarawa or HMS Ocean, serve the purpose of carrying and landing Marines and operate a large contingent of helicopters for that purpose. Also known as "commando carriers" or "helicopter carriers", they have a secondary capability to operate VSTOL aircraft.

Lacking the firepower of other warships, carriers by themselves are considered vulnerable to attack by other ships, aircraft, submarines or missiles and therefore travel as part of a carrier battle group (CVBG) for their protection. Unlike other types of capital ships in the 20th century, aircraft carrier designs since World War II have been effectively unlimited by any consideration save budgetary, and the ships have increased in size to handle the larger aircraft: The large, modern Nimitz class of United States Navy carriers has a displacement nearly four times that of the World War II-era USS Enterprise yet its complement of aircraft is roughly the same, a consequence of the steadily increasing size of military aircraft over the years.[citation needed]

  • @Phead128 Its as i said, every country goes threw hard times to work out all the kinks. Like, people are blaming the US for whats happening in the middle east, but they forget the fact that France, Britain, and other nations are there as well. People also forget the fact that after every natural disaster, from the Tsunami in Japan, to the Earthquake in Haiti, the US has devoted more to rescue efforts and reconstruction then anyone else.

  • and now the uss obama to bring american fire power in iran...

  • @Internetbutthurt If you don't like it then get the fuck off this American built and owned website you rustbucket troll.

  • @sblansh I'll bet that if they do make a USS Barack Obama, it'll be fuckin badass.

  • how many aircraftcarrier do US build ?

  • Totally fucking hypocritical to say 'bringing firepower anywhere in the world" and then "bringing peace anywhere in the world". Its deluded and demonstrates why most of the world hates the US. I hate to rain on your parade but during a congressional hearing during the Cold War the then head of the USN was asked how long the US carrier fleet would last against the Soviet Union if war broke out. 36 hours was his response.

  • @carsiotto E) The US and Britain then installed a puppet, Fazlollah Zahedi, who hated the Soviet Union, but was a very bad guy himself. Later he was over thrown, and the new leader hated the West. A combination of activities from various nations has put us where we are at today because of Blow Back. Friends of mine in Britain say its not much better over there. Now is a time for change in the US, and the man to do it is Ron Paul.

  • @carsiotto Your blaming the whole of the US, when that is unfair. Blame the people in charge who accept bribes from Corporations with there own interest. As for the Middle East, that can be traced back to the fifties. Britain at the time was basically strip mining the place. The Elected leader in Iran, Mohammad Mosaddegh, basically told Britain he wanted more then what he was getting. Britain went to th US leader Dwight D. Eisenhower for help, and he sent in the CIA. C)

  • @porpus99 You are mentioning Western European countries that do not compare to the US in terms of economic or military strength. The fact that they are their supporting a vastly superior ally, means nothing. Simply pawns of the Americans. Also if you know anything about Haiti and its history, you would know that it has been western european and US powers that have created it's current condition. The US is a hypocrite. Promoting democracy through brutal military force.

  • cant wait for Iran to sink all the aircraft carriers in the straight.

  • so many aircraft carrier china and iran dislike this video.

  • What we need, looking forward, is another larger, more powerful generation of carrier. The first of which should be a tribute in name to out greatest president ever, George W. Bush.
